ProjWEB evaluation Sem. 6 2002

BYGGE- OG ANLÆGSKONSTRUKTION, 6. SEMESTER 2002

INDEKLIMA OG ENERGIØKONOMI, 6. SEMESTER 2002

Participants list.
The project web evaluation took place May 30 2002 (student projects were delivered for examination May 28 2002).

The following groups where evaluated
  • C205 (look at site) [examen 10.6.2002, 0830]
  • C206 (look at site) [examen 11.6.2002, 0830]
  • C207 (look at site) [examen 6.6.2002, 0830]
  • C208 (look at site) [examen 13.6.2002, 0830]
  • C209 (look at site) [examen 14.6.2002, 0830]

  • C201 (look at site) [examen 12.6.2002, 0830]
  • C203 (look at site) [examen 7.6.2002, 0830]
  • C204 (look at site) [examen 17.6.2002, 0830]
The project webs have been evaluated according to
Content, design/functionality, structure, platform dependency, and other special features.

It shall be emphasized here that different groups have different ambition levels and that they have great freedom to design and implement their project webs. During the course several IT tools to use have been presented.

The Project Webs can be used to document the project and the actual project work process as well as be a support during the project work. There is only a minimum compulsory requirement on content (project description, solution strategy and findings from the project work, solution summary, and references.)

The group has used a good routine for distributed work (also from home) on project documents. Because of firewall problems they could unfortunately not use Netmeeting for shared work on applications. A illustrative image page with explanations is available (.jpg images though no interactive 3D images). No database or 3D presentations are given. Each page is marked with latest update and responsible publisher.

The project web aims are explained in a introduction as well as a project summary. The IT experience page is good. The main report is possible to download in pdf or doc formats. The site is easy to navigate and has a consistent and simple interface. External links are opened in separate windows.

No special feed-back function is provided except through email to group individuals on the group presentation page.

This is a simple site as well as the underlying file structure. That is the site must be further structured if it is going to be expanded. The web behaves well on different platforms.

In summary a simple and well designed site easy to navigate.

Images are presented in qtvr format (one in 360 degres) and jpg formats. No image descriptions are given (except for mouseover pop-up text visible from Explorer on Windows platforms). A 3d vrml model of the building is accessible. Drawings are presented as gif images and can be downloaded as dwg files (requires access to Autocad which is not mentioned as guidance). A good database connection is established.

The site has a minimalist design with most project material accessible through downloadable doc etc files. (doc files should be avoided in outside internal intranet use due to high risk for virus spread). It is though fine that the types of download files are given in the Appendix listing. No experiences from use of the different IT tools are reported. Pages are not marked fore latest update and responsible publisher. A flat file underlying structure is used which has to be further structured when the site expands.

(There is a link containing back slashes in the URL address to the 'presentation of brohuset' page on the entrance page that causes no action when clicked, on non Windows platforms).

The reports can not be accessed from Netscape or Opera due to use of Microsoft specific features in the html code. Html pages seem to have been partly generated from Microsoft Word program with no critical follow up to secure wide platform functionality.

In summary a very compact site with most project information in download format and with a well functioning database connection.

The site is easy to navigate (though the 'go to top of page' and 'tilbage' commands [document.write(sidefod), document.write(sidehoved)] do not work in Netscape). The site has a very consistent and well balanced graphic style. Windows can be re-scaled without hiding information outside the window border. There is no inviting feed-back button (only via email to group members).

Relevant project documents are presented for download with name and size for easy access. There is a page with images from the building site with possibilities to browse through the images. This is good though we miss image explanations and possibilities to access images through click on the thumbnail sheet. Interactive 3D models of building structure and some components are presented in VRML format (in very small files). Pages are marked with publishing date but not responsible publisher. A commented list over used programs are found under the 'IT' heading.

No database is integrated into the application. Jpg, gif, and qtvr files are used for images, drawings, and interactive images. Downloads documents are in PDF and DWG formats. The group has used vrml files to present interactive models.

The underlying structure well supports the site with containers for images, construction information etc.

As mentioned above unfortunately a microsoft specific in-built function function is used (as easy to do in standard html code). The underlying html code is easy to read and well structured. Relative references to pages are used enabling easy transport of the whole site to other computers.

In summary a well designed site with basic information on the project with possibilities to download documents.

This is a very well designed project web with a short introduction to the users on the aim with the site. The site contains interactive images in qtvr and an interactive 3d vrml model produced in ArchiCad that enables the user to walk around in a flat.

The content is presented in four different languages (Danish, German, Islandic, and Bosnian) to ease access for the multilingual project group. The project is mainly documented through self extracting compressed drawing files accessible through an expandable menu hierarchy. Project reports are possible to download as pdf files.

Big emphasis has been put on producing a platform independent site also allowing connection from low bandwidth access points (tele modem). The IT related design issues are commented on in separate reports. An intranet was produced for easy handling of project documents. The connected database handles a guest book and is well described in a separate document (conceptual design and developed asp scripts). Several Java scripts have been developed (and listed) to enhance the functionality of the site. Feedback can be given to individuals or to the group as a whole. The pages are not marked with publishing date and responsible publisher.

The site has a consistent design with a clean graphic profile. The underlying file structure is properly designed to handle the content.

In summary a well designed project web, easy to navigate and use with access to project design reports also on the IT related part.

The user is initially met by a short description of the aims of the site. The used IT tools (programs) are commented on a separate page. A photo gallery is available with non-commented images in jpg format. Commented visualisations are though presented in jpg, an interactive 360 degree qtvr image, animation of the building in avi format, and an interactive 3d vrml model produced in 3dStudia Max. The VRML model is very detailed and sized 4.7 Mbytes (a size warning could though be given before download). No database connection is presented.

The site is easy to navigate however with a few back slashes in URL addresses (in the navigation frame) causing problems in non-Windows environments. Feed back can only be given through individual mails to the group members at the 'group page'. Update and publisher is marked only on the opening page.

The site contains easy to navigate building design documentation accompanied with drawings in jpg format. (No links to project reports).

The underlying file structure is well suited for the site.

In summary a well designed graphically clean site with easy to navigate on-line building design documentation and visualisations.

The site is easy to navigate with access to construction, IT etc project content. A short introduction to the purpose with site is given. All pages are marked with recent update and responsible publisher. The graphic style is simple. The main project results are found downloadable pdf files. The IT tools used and reason and thoughts behind is well described on the 'IT page'.

The group has produced very detailed interactive VRML models and filmed fly-through in AVI format. Image gallery with jpg images is accessible from a thumbnail page (with short image descriptions). No database is integrated to the site.

The group image is very large (300k, 1000*1500 pixels) and scaled when presented on the web page. The image could have been reduced (roughly 10 times) thus minimising download time (and space requirement). The same image address also contains a back-slash (can only be read on Windows machines). Some external links (correctly opened in separate target windows) contain back-slashes thus unabling use in non Microsoft Windows environments.

The underlying html code is clean and easy to read. The file structure is simple and fits the the site functionality. The site is accessible from both Explorer and Netscape browsers.

In summary a simple (with little project specific text and images) but easy to access site with possibility to download some well elaborated (but large 14 Mbytes) interactive 3D VRML models.
